Microsoft's new operating system. Windows Vista.
I really am in two minds about it. I know its a new operating system, and as such expect there to be bugs, and some issues.... But I still expect a working system. Lets start with the good shall we? I like the way Vista looks. With Aero and glass it looks bloody fantastic, the menues are well thaught-out, and for general use (opening programs, finding documents, etc.) I think it is bloody brilliant. A huge step forward. I've also found the proformance as a desktop to be a step up from XP as well. The actual operating system is loading quickly, and programs launch nice and fast (well atleast on my system anyway). I also love the sidebar. Yes I know widgets like these can be gotten with a program like Yahoo Widgets, or something similar, but you know what, I'm lazy and like this kind of functionality there. Hardware suport seems really good. Getting drivers over the internet is alot easier now, as users can just tell windows to "search the net for drivers" and it will do it itself, install the drivers, and configure them fairly damn good (altho I know for some people this has failed). Also the new games folder is a brilliant idea. Expecily for someone like me who had 10 Quake3 icons all launching different mods. With this, I can setup profiles, and use the one icon to launch any of them. Ok now the bad. Stability. For me its just not stable. Randomly my computer will seem to go into "sleep" mode, of which it cannot wake up from. That is all HDD activity ceases, and the monitor turns off. No matter what keys I mash, or how much I wiggle the mouse, it still does this. I've got a feeling this may be due to the fact that both my keyboard and mouse are USB, and there is an article on the MSKB about vista not waking up with USB Mice and keyboards. For one, thats just f***ing stupid. XP can wakeup from USB peripherals, why not Vista? Also, I TURNED SLEEP OFF IN THE POWER SETTINGS IN VISTA. I will also refer you to the fact that this sleeping is random. It could be five minutes after boot, it could be 4 hours after boot. And always seems to be while I'm talking to my gf over MSN, or halfway through a map in Q3A. This is REALLY frustrating as you can imagine, and is the number 1 show stopper for me. The next thing is network sharing. ohno, you can't simple tick a box anymore to share a folder. NOOO! You have to choose which user to share the folder as, then click the "share" button, at which point, insted of giving you a nice short address, the people needing your file have to go through your whole freakin file hiracy to get to the f***ing file. For example, On ym desktop I made a folder called "shared" and put some files for Uni i needed on my laptop. Share the folder, then it spits out "users who want to access these files will need to go to \\copperquake\users\matthew\desktop\share to access these files". I've jsut gone "wtf" typed that into my laptop, and WOW NOTHING! well, actualy, it asked me for a user name and password, of which I didn't have. So into Vista, and turn off password required for sharing. Address again... it loads..... AND THERES NO FILES THERE! I think, just think (don't hold me to this), that I have to share each file individualy! I gave up, and havn't tried that. But if thats true. OMFG! what in gods name was MS thinking! Ok, and the last thing which pisses me off about Vista. Its nice and fast, right, but why does that mean I lose frames in games? Okok, I was expecting a 10fps or so drop in the games I play. But... Quake 3 Arena. 90fps. WTF?! This game was released at the end of 1999. I play it at 800x600 with all the graphic details lower than what the menu will let you set, and I have a frame limiter at 125fps. My system is capible of pushing over 700fps with these settings (heck it pushes 500fps with full details at 1280x1024 in this game), but vista BARLY gets above 90fps in game. Ok, I said to my self, must be their f***ed up OpenGL suport. So proceded to load UT2k4 with my old .ini file from my XP setup (i'm lazy, hate setting settings). 20fps in Dm-Asbestos! WHAT?! Okok, lower details, etc. now running at 800x600 with everything on medium insted of high, and the best I can get is 40fps. THIS SYSTEM CAN DO 80 FPS IN THIS GAME. Oh and its not a smooth 40fps either (i can live with a low FPS in this game if its constant), NO IT RANDOMLY JERKS! How am I ment to hit someone in InstaGib CTF if it keeps going all PowerPoint on me? The new Vista. I love it. I really do. But those three things are just two big a show stoppers for me. Hopefuly the BlackScreenOfDeath will be fixed for me soon, and the framerate issues i'm sure will be helped. But the networking. :S thats just made me sad. Right now, I wana get Vista off my computer. I'm gonna take another trip down Linux road for my desktop. If I can't get ATI drivers again, then I guess its back to XP. Thats a real shame. I really really really do love Vista. It just keeps breaking my heart. -------------------- I am DasBok. F*** your opinions! Quake Quake Quake Quake Quake Quake Quake Quake |

With this, I can setup profiles, and use the one icon to launch any of them. Windows Vista is basically made to look after itself so that those people who don't know anything about computers don't have to do to much. It even defrags and rearranges its own files! One thing that is a annoying with vista at the moment is getting software and drivers for hardware and components you may just happen to be running. Like drivers for a Lexmark scanner in one of those 3 in 1 printers. Vista, at the moment, is leaving us with half of our hardware not working to its full potential. It's not Microsofts fault. Its the companies that make the drivers and software, they just haven't caught up to the future yet. And also Nero Burning Software isn't available yet.... Although Vists has its own burning wizard... i still think Nero is better. But all the companies will eventually catch up and design their new Vista capable software and drivers and our hardware will be working fully again. Protection, dude. Just because the document may not be all that important, file sharing and networking is a back way into you system. QUOTE Stability. For me its just not stable. Yeah XP can wake up through USB peripherals. Vista can't just yet because it is proberbly a work in progress or they haven't thought of it as a important need. By the sounds of the way your computer falls asleep at random times, that is not right. There is something up there. It may not be Vista, it could be something total unrelated to Vista. Just keep at it, dude. Vista will get better all in good time. After all, Bill Gates will want to make it a operating system to remember, because its after all his last, he is handing Microsoft over. Ok, what a retarded post there Tank.
First of all. Vista doesn't do the auto defrag anymore. Thats beta2. RC1/2 and the final version of Vista DO NOT AUTO DEFRAG. network protection? This is a CLOSED network with no outside access. Vista isn't letting me fileshare..... when fileshare is turned on. Vista should ahve been FINISHED before being released to the public. f*** RC1 was more stable and usefull than this. Please please PLEASE actualy use the operating system or get a clue before posting again This post has been edited by DasBok: Mar 6 2007, 09:38 AM -------------------- I am DasBok. QUOTE First of all. Vista doesn't do the auto defrag anymore. Thats beta2. RC1/2 and the final version of Vista DO NOT AUTO DEFRAG. It actually depends on what Vista pack you are running..... so what are you running? QUOTE network protection? This is a CLOSED network with no outside access. Vista isn't letting me fileshare..... when fileshare is turned on. Sorry, i accidently put that network statement in there by accident. My Bad. No, not network protection in general, file protection and computer access. Its protecting the file from unauthorised access and usage, not the network or other terminals/computers. But still, that does not stop file share from being a weakness. Even if you are using a closed network. File sharing is still away into a computer. Even if it you have no outside access. It all comes down to cryptography. QUOTE Vista should have been FINISHED before being released to the public. f*** RC1 was more stable and usefull than this. It doesn't matter wether it is finished or not, they will finish it bit by bit via Microsft Updates. QUOTE Please please PLEASE actualy use the operating system or get a clue before posting again Tank I do have a clue , i have used it. And i agree it is crap in some ways. But it is also pretty good, considering it is the next generation in operating systems and their is no other company that can stand up to it yet. Actually no. I have not used any of the Vista Betas or Test versions.
My points are coming straight from the complete version (retail), that is not so complete. -------------------- |

Yeah, don't worry Phrantic Snr, we are keeping it cool.
DasBok: QUOTE First of all. Vista doesn't do the auto defrag anymore. Thats beta2. RC1/2 and the final version of Vista DO NOT AUTO DEFRAG. Can you prove that, because i can prove that it does auto defrag. Click Here. Now who doesn't know waht they are on about. I knew that it auto defrags, but i just had to prove it to you. You can't argue with Microsoft because they are the ones who created Vista. I think you should know what you are on about and actually use Vista before you go on about it. You know, sometimes, it's not what you say, it's how you say it.
