If I told you there was a fully working safe - just made of LEGO - would you store stuff in it?

Most rational people wouldn't. After all, it's LEGO right? You can pull it apart and it's not exactly burglar proof.

Well, now it's time to think again.

Firstly, in case people want to pick it up and do a runner, the safe comes with a motion detecting alarm. It's not a paperweight either, weighing just under 7kg while storing 30 litres of space. And the beauty of the safe is that it comes with over 305 billion combinations.

The trick is the wheels on the door that operate the combination code. They're direction sensitive, so turning to a number from the left isn't the same as turning from the right. On top of that, the safe comes with internal safety bars to prevent disassembly.

A video of the safe in action can be viewed by visiting the article on the front page.

Mindstorms costs a small fortune as well.

Actually, when you stop thinking digital is the be all and end all, you realise that most analog combination locks work by turning the dial both ways as well. This is a simple, 3 number combo lock made from wood, but you can see it's innards and how it works. Awfully clever, really.

That's neat. How'd you come across something like that?
